Chestnut Horses Not So Crazy?
Chestnut horses do not deserve their reputation for crankiness, say researchers, but they did find them generally bolder than their bay counterparts in an Australian study. University of Sydney researchers have published their findings from a pilot study that explored the relationship between coat colour genetics and equine behaviour.
They found that the breed, sex and age of a horse significantly influenced many behaviours, but their findings refuted the notion of the “crazy chestnut”.
They reported major behavioural differences between bays and chestnuts, but the latter were not more likely to display undesirable behaviours.
Brandon Velie and his colleagues, writing in the journal, Applied Animal Behaviour Science, said mutations in genes influencing melanocytes – mature melanin-forming cells, especially in the skin – not only affected the colour of an animal, but were also believed to influence physiological and behavioural functions.
On that basis, the common perception among horse owners that chestnut coat colour was linked to bad behaviour seemed plausible.
The study team set out to explore the perception by seeking out potential genetic associations between coat colour and bad behaviour.

Austin Darragh 1927-2015
Dear Customers, Friends and Suppliers. It is with great sadness that we announce that our offices will be closed on Wednesday, October 7th out of respect for our friend, Chairman and father, Professor Austin Darragh.
Austin passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon having been well cared for by the Hermitage Clinic. We would like to sign off with an adage which we feel epitomizes the man:
To laugh often and much,
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children,
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends
To appreciate beauty,
To find the best in others,
To leave the world a bit better,
Whether by a healthy child
A garden patch
Or a redeemed social condition
To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
(Ralph Waldu Emerson)
Sincere thanks to you all for your kind wishes
May he rest in peace

Harry Dabbs Saddle Makers have announced a new sponsorship deal with Eventer Aidan Keogh to coincide with their launch of the Harry Dabbs Platinum range of saddles onto the Irish market.
In a deal, brokered through their Irish agents, Darragh Equestrian Solutions, the owner of the world famous Tredstep Ireland becomes the first Irish Eventer to be taken on by the company.
Managing Director of Darragh Equestrian Helena Walsh said:
“Following on from the success that we have enjoyed in Showjumping, where we sponsor John Floody, we are delighted now to welcome Aidan on board in the Eventing field. We feel that these associations are pivotal to our brand development and product positioning programmes.
Also making the announcement was Peter Wilkes Managing Director of Harry Dabbs who commented:
“We have been monitoring the benefits of such sponsorship arrangements particularly in Ireland for three years now and feel that given how the relationship with John (Floody) has performed a compelling proposition was put to us by our agents Darragh Equestrian to use the same model in Eventing.
We consider having someone like Aidan involved from both his presence in Eventing and the industry will no doubt be an asset to achieving our goals. I should like to take this opportunity to welcome him on board and look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship.”
Aidan Keogh, who competes consistently on both the Irish and the British Eventing Circuits, stated:
“I am delighted to become involved with this sponsorship and wish to thank both Harry Dabbs and Darragh Equestrian for bringing this to fruition. WhiIst I have been competing in Jaguar saddles for some time this association brings greater benefits for my horses as saddle technology develops.
I am particularly pleased with the attention to detail and the after service which Helena provides here and it gives great comfort to have that level of support for my competition horses”
Congratulations to Sven Hadley, winner of the Tagg Bursary 2012.Sven will spend time training with Cian O’ Connor.
As per last year, the young rider division was hotly contested with little separating those on the top end of the leader board. Claiming the Bursary prize on a final tally of 20 points was European Team Gold Medallist Sven Hadley. Hadley was consistently placed in the league, claiming a win at Boswell and the runner-up spot at Mullingar, but it was his placing at Tatterstall’s that gave him the extra point to finish ahead of his closest rival James Brennan on 19 points. Sven is pictured here with Helena Walsh (Darragh Equestrian), Cian O’ Connor and Charlie Murphy.
EQUILINE ANNOUNCES NEW REPRESENTATION IN IRELAND
Commenting on the appointment Darragh Equestrians Managing Director Helena Walsh said,
“We are delighted to have won the confidence of Equiline who is the pinnacle of Quality Style and Comfort. Further more we are most encouraged by the interest that has already been shown in the Irish market”
Not only does Equiline boast of an exceptional range of riding apparel and horse wear but it also has a stable of top international riders who endorse the brand amongst which Billy Twomey and Cian O Connor are two.
Founded in the 1980’s Equiline has grown to a point of international reference in the riding world. The company mission is to offer top quality products to riders and horses thanks to the use of equally top quality fabrics and production processes.Specialising in producing high specification materials from efficient transpiration and shock absorbing saddle cloths to the unmistakable elegance of Italian design which stands out from its fabrics and the new technical Equiline Competition Jacket X Cool.
Additionally Equiline offers an unparalleled personalisation service across its ranges which incorporates a wide selection of bindings, braids and cords for saddlecloths and rugs to specific detailing on riding apparel.
The Leinster Mini Grand Prix league came to a spectacular end last Saturday at Barnadown with Longford’s Robert Harrison claiming the coveted young rider bursary sponsored by Tagg Equestrian in conjunction with Darragh Equestrian Solutions. This bursary will allow Harrison to spend one week with his horse under the instruction of international show jumper Billy Twomey.
Speaking afterwards, Harrison said: “It has been a great year and all the horses have performed very well. It is great to get this chance to spend a week with Billy Twomey as he is considered one of the best riders in the world. I would like to thank Tagg and Darragh Equestrian for giving me this great opportunity. It is with bursaries like this that I can develop my skills and gain international experience”.
It all went down to a fine wire in the final leg in Barnadown as Harrison topped the Tagg Bursary leader board on a total of 35 points, while lying in second place on a total of 22 points was Daniel Coyle. Harrison was also in contention for the Cian O’ Connor Bursary, as he lay in third place with his horse Vicar on 15 points, just three points behind Nicholas Butler and Oliver Glancy.
From a total of 26 competitors that went to post in the final leg, just six combinations made it through to the Damien Beevor’s jump-off course. First to go, Vincent Byrne held nothing back with his mount Cordonos as he scorched home with nothing to add in a time of 37.05. Next to go with Best Lady Derek Mc Connell knew he would have to deliver a fast time to keep John Floody at bay. Leaving nothing to chance Mc Connell negotiated all the tights lines and crossed the line with a clean sheet in 39.27. Fourth to go, Robert Harrison looked set for the challenge. Setting off in a blistering pace, Harrison was up on time coming to the double, however four faults at the first part meant that Harrison could only slot into sixth place, which was enough to secure the Tagg Bursary.

HARRISON IN POLE POSITION FOR THE TAGG BURSARY
This season has got off to a cracking start for Young Rider Robert Harrison as he has produced some good results to put him not only at the top of the Leinster Mini Grand Prix League but also as a hot contender for the Tagg Bursary on 15 points. Being placed 6th at Louth County and winning at Kill 4 points separates him from Wesley Byrne on 11 having being placed 9th overall at Louth County and 2nd at Raheen na Gun.
The Tagg Bursary is sponsored by Tagg Equestrian and Darragh Equestrian Solutions. It provides for a weeks training with Rolex World Ranking no 7 Billy Twomey at his base in Cheshire. The beneficiary of the Tagg bursary will be determined by the overall leading Young Rider nationally at the final of the Leinster Mini Grand Prix series Final which will be held at Newcastle show in September.
It may have been blustery but it was none the less a beautiful day at the fifth round which was staged at Seaview Stables hosted by showjumper Thomas Byrne.
However due to the clash of dates most of the Young Riders were competing in the National Grand Prix at Kill so it left the door open to the senior riders to take the spoils in the 1m30 Grand Prix class.
And that they did as six went in to the jump off, it was to be Gorey man Jim Donohue on Reality who emerged the victor.
Not too despondent either was the host Thomas Byrne who didn’t go home empty handed as he slotted into 3rd for his trouble with Ballyshan Valentino.
The series moves to Ravensdale in Co Louth this weekend but will not see current leader Robert Harrison compete in the Tagg Bursary as he will be on international duty in Reims along with fellow Young Riders Gerard Clarke and Conal Mc Laughlin.

FLOODY GOES ON THE JAG
John Floody has entered in to a sponsorship deal with Jaguar Equestrian, through their distributors in Ireland, Darragh Equestrian Solutions. No stranger to success he partnered Larkhill Cruiser and Ashbourne to clinch both the Chippison Spring Tour and the Autumn Grand Prix series last year.
Larkhill Cruiser has gone on to be very successfully campaigned by Cian O’Connor this year having being produced by John. He also produced some very impressive results last season having being placed in every single Premier Grand Prix on the circuit and winning the Premier in Balmoral. Other successes included winning the international Grand Prix at Tattersalls and both the Derby and the Premier Grand Prix at Cavan.
He has some nice horses in tow for this coming season and has already claimed two legs of the Chippison Spring Tour so far with PMR Rehy Irish All Star, at the opening round in Kildare and more recently, virtually on home turf, at Broadmeadows, riding PMR Cabellero. Both horses are owned by Paula Rafter.
Parallel to these events he has agreed the sponsorship deal with Jaguar Equestrian for the coming season, brokered by Darragh Equestrian.
“I am delighted to have been approached by Darragh Equestrian who are huge supporters of the sport and are well known for their involvement in many initiatives. They have been very attentive and have involved me in all aspects of tailoring the products to meet my needs and for those of my horses. Furthermore, to date I have had a bit of success competing in a Jaguar!! ” says Floody.
Helena Walsh Managing Director of Darragh Equestrian stated “John has been on our radar for some time and in truth we would like to have brought him on board last year but we were committed to another arrangement, which worked well. However this is a new season, we have had several meetings with John and have come up with a formula which we collectively think will work. John is a marvellous rider and not only is he highly competitive, he is also one of the sports true gentlemen. I am confident that he will represent our brands superbly”

James Kernan appointed Chairman of the Showjumpers Club
James Kernan has been elected Chairman of the Showjumpers Club at the AGM held in the Killashee House Hotel on Monday 31st of January. He takes up the role from Edward Doyle, who has served in the position since 2006 and will now serve under Kernan as vice chairman in 2011. On accepting the position the incoming chairman thanked Edward Doyle for his hard work, whilst in office and expressed his desire to continue to develop the club’s relationships with Horse Sport Ireland and Showjumping Ireland which have been successfully forged over the last number of years.
The meeting, which was very well attended, heard tributes to both Doyle and Club Secretary Maureen Bagnall, who is to stand down during the year, for their unstinting service to the sport and who will hand over the secretarial position to Suzy Kelly Byrne over the next six months having filled the role since the Club’s foundation.
CEO of Horse Sport Ireland Damien Mc Donald gave a comprehensive presentation of the body’s activities since its formation in 2008. His talk covered a wide range of topics which included major issues faced, breeding initiatives, sponsorship, development programmes, coaching, branding Team Ireland and the challenges for 2011 and beyond. One specific issue which fuelled some frank debate from the floor was the public relations policy for the sport in the general media and how the lack of positive publicity is impacting on attracting public interest and also how the low visibility affects the prospect for external sponsorship. Mr Mc Donald proceeded to outline the HSI draft blueprint for media relations which has been tabled for discussion and stated that there was a concerted effort in train to develop stronger relationships with the general media.
Many new appointments were made to the committee including the return of Dave Darragh to the role of PRO which he held in 2005 and 2006. He intends to ramp up the communication levels to the members and the public through the media, website but more particularly through Facebook.
The out going chairman expressed his gratitude to Horse Sport Ireland, Show Jumping Ireland TRI, Darragh Equestrian and Chippison Spring Tour sponsors John and Marie Burke who are to continue their support for the coming series. In addition Laurence Dunne of Jumpinaction will present a print to the winning owner for each round of the series which commences on Sunday 13th of February in Kildare International.
Incoming SJI Chairman Christy Murphy also took the opportunity to address the assembled by pledging to ensure cohesiveness between all the showjumping bodies and paid tribute to outgoing chairman of SJI Ronan Corrigan for his achievements during his term of office. He stated that the SJI is in good stead posting a modest surplus having been in deficit previously and that he will be operating an open door policy under his watch.
